Navigating Dementia Care

What makes Rawhiti’s secure dementia care different.

Creating a safe, social and engaging environment for residents.

Leticia and Richard share what sets the Remuera rest home’s secure dementia unit apart. For residents who require care within Rawhiti’s secure memory loss unit, the quality of care and sense of community are exceptional.

While the doors may be electronically secured at times to ensure residents’ safety and wellbeing, they remain open for much of the day. Residents are encouraged to enjoy a wide range of engaging activities, both within and outside the secure area.

Thanks to a high staff-to-resident ratio and the support of a dedicated diversional therapist, residents in the memory loss unit can participate in outings, share meals, and take part in activities alongside other residents. Then they return to a safe, calming environment where they can rest and sleep.

The secure dementia unit itself is spacious, beautifully decorated and thoughtfully designed. Even when the doors are closed to ensure safety, the environment is warm and welcoming, and residents feel kindness, connection and a strong sense of community.
